The objective is to prepare each part for finishing, so a smooth, scratch free surface is key. For stains, too smooth is just as bad as a rough surface (too smooth, and the stain is too light, not smooth enough, and the stain is too dark), so following the grit schedule shown in the Procedures is imperative, and should be edited when the results are not as expected.
